THE HUGE ARMY OF DWARF - The Foyer Ardent
THE FOYER ARDENT FAMILY
Motto:
“Fire and hammer make the anvil sing.”
To speak of the Foyer Ardent family is not merely to speak of one of the seven founding families of the United Dwarven Confederation. It is to speak of a kingdom. A kingdom so well hidden that many travellers remain unaware of its very existence.
To reach it, one must venture into a deep gorge whose sheer, smooth rock walls seem to have been carved by the Great Forger himself. No army could deploy there. Only a few hardy fir trees manage to cling to cracks in the stone. Far below, a river of milky-green water, born of eternal glaciers, roars through the gorge. For millennia it has leapt from boulder to boulder, tirelessly polishing the rock. Then the first tunnels appear. They were not dug by the Foyer Ardent, but by their oldest allies: the Taille-Pierre family. These galleries pass through the mountains as though the mountains themselves had agreed to open for their children.
When the traveller finally emerges from the gorges, the landscape changes abruptly. Before them stretches Lake Superior, a vast emerald-green mirror whose still waters reflect a ring of mountains plunging straight into the lake.
High on the mountainsides stand grand stone residences, veritable dwarven palazzos adorned with ancient frescoes and carved rosettes. They speak not of ostentatious wealth, but of centuries of prosperity patiently built. Below, along the waterfront, the workers’ towns live to the rhythm of the forges. Hammers ring out day and night. Torrent water turns enormous wheels that power the machines used to shape metal: armour plates, heavy and personal weapons, tools and blades of every size, as well as precious metals worked into fine jewellery. Every metal object used by the Confederation bears, in one way or another, the mark of the Foyer Ardent, certified by the stamp of an anvil and hammer, just as on the family coat of arms.
The elders say that the Great Forger once pressed his thumb upon this valley. From that imprint sprang steel, titanium, gold, silver and platinum… but above all, the most precious metal of them all.
Gorgonium.
Its composition remains the most closely guarded secret in the entire kingdom. At any given time, only two scholars know the complete process of its manufacture. When one approaches the end of their long life, a single apprentice is chosen to inherit that knowledge. No one else. Any attempt to uncover the secret is punishable by death. A temperature just a little too high makes the metal brittle; too little heat leaves it no better than ordinary ore. Between those extremes lies a craft passed down through generations. Gorgonium produces the finest blades known to dwarves, capable of retaining an almost everlasting edge. Projectiles coated with a thin layer of it can penetrate the toughest armour. Armour-piercing fin-stabilised rounds cast from this metal can be recovered after battle and melted down again. But Gorgonium is so costly that the Foyer Ardent never use it carelessly. Every gram is accounted for. Every piece has a specific purpose.
As guardians of Gorgonium, the Foyer Ardent are also the only dwarves permitted to keep their service weapons at home. In their kingdom, target shooting is practically a family tradition: dwarven men and women regularly gather at firing ranges to maintain skills that might one day save their valley.
Yet the wealth of the Foyer Ardent extends far beyond their forges. The gold, silver and platinum mined from their mountains make them the sole minters of the United Dwarven Confederation’s currency. Every coin struck in the kingdom bears their mark, and no outsider has ever seen their mints at work. The greatest dwarven fortunes rest in their vaults. So do the most dangerous secrets. The Foyer Ardent could, if they wished, wield considerable influence over the other families. They never do. Not out of kindness, but because a banker inspires greater trust by remaining discreet. They lend. They invest. They negotiate. And their interest rates often serve as a reminder that business is business.
Yet beneath that stern discipline lies a deep sense of solidarity. No child born on their lands grows up in need. No elder is abandoned. Among the Foyer Ardent, the word “family” reaches far beyond blood ties. It embraces an entire people.
Of the seven founding families, none shares closer bonds with the Foyer Ardent than the Taille-Pierre. One opens the mountain; the other shapes the treasures within it. Their destinies have advanced side by side since a time so ancient that no chronicler knows how their alliance began. The Taille-Pierre drive the tunnels, secure the mines and extract the most precious stone. The Foyer Ardent turn those riches into weapons, armour, currency and works of goldsmithing. Without the former, the latter would never have reached the deep seams of Gorgonium. Without the latter, the former would never have seen their gemstones transformed into the most admired jewels in the Confederation.
Master jewellers from both families often work together. One reveals the beauty of the stone; the other gives it a setting worthy of it, making jewellery an art celebrated by every dwarven family.
No treaty seals this alliance. No signature guarantees it. The word of a Taille-Pierre given to a Foyer Ardent is worth more than any parchment. If one calls, the other answers. Always, without reservation. Many other dwarven families envy this bond, but no one can break what was forged in the past: an indivisible union, even in adversity.
