The Birth of Gunnar

Gunnar is one of the main characters of THE HUGE ARMY OF DWARFS, a 28mm range that is gradually expanding with new personalities from its universe.

For Gunnar, the brief I gave Greg Girault was fairly precise: I wanted a natural leader, a veteran who had lost a leg in the war and, above all, a genuine weapons fanatic. With Gunnar, the principle was simple: the more weapons he carries, the happier he is!

He therefore needed a main weapon fitted with a grenade launcher, the corresponding ammunition carried on his gear and, because that obviously wasn't enough, a particularly imposing combat knife.

Originally, I imagined Gunnar as a member of the Fils du Kraken family, those seafaring dwarfs whose world and colours particularly appealed to me for this miniature. But somewhere between the birth of the product and the birth of the character, Gunnar began to take on a life of his own. As the Lore developed, he eventually sailed into very different waters…

The miniature was sculpted by Greg Girault, who immediately embraced the original idea. And that was when a fortunate coincidence added another dimension to the project.

Without us ever having discussed it, Greg added two crawling zombie goblins from the GREEN WALKERS universe to the base.

At the risk of revealing a small piece of the story to those who are only now discovering it, the zombie goblins of GREEN WALKERS are the creations of a mad dwarf scientist: Dr Toblerius.

Without even realising it, Greg had created a link between THE HUGE ARMY OF DWARFS and GREEN WALKERS.

Sometimes, things really do have a way of falling perfectly into place.
